Description:
Big Data is transforming IT security by allowing us to correlate numerous and disparate types of security information sources. With the new techniques Big Data offers, we can now easily identify security anomalies and support strategic decision making. Data and security intelligence in an organization can be leveraged – from security logs, asset databases, intelligence feeds, user activity and file monitoring help improve the accuracy and speed of decision making. These same techniques allow us to set and monitor broad security metrics, which when coupled with visualization technologies, can be an extremely effective way to communicate with non-IT stakeholders.
Fundamentally, Big Data is all about creating intelligence from a large set of data, and the more data you introduce into the mix, the more relevant and actionable the result. However, bringing all the data together can be challenging. We still have silos of data for different platforms and applications. This is particularly true for virtual systems which are commonly managed outside of security. With the increasing number of exploits such as Cloudburst, packet storming, Backdoor, and ROM overwrites targeting virtual systems, and the increasing number of critical applications and data assets being moved to virtual assets, there is an urgent need to extend security programs to virtual assets. Data can be brought from these activities into an enterprise-wide view of the environment.
